“underwhelming in an overwhelming way”
Zach this week put a title to what I’ve been trying to articulate for a while now: Our blogging, tweets, tumbles and news feeds are the firehose of communication we have opened up on the people around us. We are literally drowning in our own data. And instead of connecting me to my friends, I have become isolated from them.
There are excellent tools coming around to help manage data. And in business, I’m sure there is huge potential. But I’m not convinced that building the perfect interface is ever going to bring me closer to my friends. The web allowed us to create all these friend updates, but it’s not going to get us out from under it all.
I think the opportunity is here for a service that can fulfill the potential of easy connectivity without creating the isolation that is currently the status quo of these technologies. What I want is a service that brings me closer to my friends, instead of giving me a proxy for them.
After having lunch with Zach the other day, it’s clear he’s got some ideas. I don’t know if he’s on the right track, but won’t it be interesting to help find out?
