About 18 Million Cracks
From Hillary Clinton’s concession speech yesterday (via NYTimes):
Although we weren’t able to shatter that highest, hardest glass ceiling this time, thanks to you, it’s got about 18 million cracks in it.
Merriam Webster (and Wikipedia) defines “glass ceiling” as
An intangible barrier within the hierarchy of a company that prevents women or minorities from obtaining upper-level positions
Is Clinton really saying that a “glass ceiling” kept her from becoming her party’s nominee? Framing her campaign as a fight against “misogynist” sentiment sells it terribly short. Claiming that sexism kept her from becoming the nominee is an unfortunate, distracting excuse.
She’s a phenomenal candidate and politician, and she happens to be a woman. This is what makes her run for the presidency historic.
