This is a specific type of news story intended to put current stock price in context with the latest news of the company.  Sometimes it summarizes straightforward news surrounding the company, and sometimes it’s a complete guess.  When this context changes, it longer informs us as to the state of the market, and thus the story needs severe updating.  However, despite this, Google Finance still reports old news about WaMu trading below $2 (down 8%), instead of the much more important information that it finished at $2.83 (up 22%).  Someone wrote the article I’m looking for, but I can’t find it among the clutter.
Stories like this should be published with automatic obsolescence-triggers that monitor the stock:  If the story is “Washington Mutual shrs sink below $2 on capital worry” at 10am, it should be filtered out by 4pm when it turns out deeper analysis is needed.
